‘Unpack’ is a word that entered our business vocabulary pretty recently and stuck. It refers to analyzing something by breaking it down into its component parts. Like, “let’s unpack this problem to decide the best approach forward,” or “if I unpack this concept, you will see the underlying logic.” Of course, the word ‘unpack’ can also mean opening and removing the contents from a suitcase or bag. If we think of the Practitioner eToolkit as a virtual change management tool bag, we can imagine opening it to see what it contains. 

Let’s unpack the Practitioner eToolkit – and the methodology that supports it – so you can get a full understanding of its purpose and value. I am sure you will find something in it you can use today!

Unpack #1:  The Methodology in the eToolkit

The Practitioner eToolkit is built around the Prosci change management methodology and is designed to teach the underlying change concepts that influence and drive how you customize and scale your change management efforts. It is for change management teams, change consultants and project managers that need to manage change in their organization. The primary components (or sections) of the Practitioner eToolkit include:

Individual Change – ADKAR Model

The Prosci ADKAR Model represents the five elements of change that must be achieved for a change to be a success:  awareness, desire, knowledge, ability and reinforcement. There is a section in the eToolkit dedicated to the ADKAR Model, including an overview, exercise, case study, diagnostic tool, corrective action tool and guidelines for applying the ADKAR Model to quick-start your ability to manage change at the individual level and guide activities at the organizational level.

Organizational Change – 3-Phase Change Management Process

Once you have a basic understanding of the theories of change, you can apply the Prosci 3-Phase Change Management Process. It is through this process that we make the connection of the ADKAR individual change process to organizational change.

Change Roles

There is a system of people in the organization responsible for supporting employees in making the successful transitions required by organizational change. From the highest levels of leadership to frontline supervisors and employees, effectively managing change requires a system of ‘actors’ all moving in unison and fulfilling their particular role based on their unique relationship to the change at hand.  Learn about these roles and how to engage them effectively.

Unpack #2:  A Framework for CHange Management Work

All of the content in the Practitioner eToolkit reinforces and supports Prosci’s world-class change management training. The Practitioner eToolkit is loaded with a set of resources for making the Prosci ADKAR Model and 3-Phase Process easy to learn and easy to apply. It is structured with step-by-step guidance on applying Prosci’s proven change management process:

  • Phase 0: Getting Started – learn change concepts and define the change
  • Phase 1: Preparing for change – develop your change management strategy, organize your team and develop your sponsor model
  • Phase 2: Managing change – create change management plans using the ADKAR Model and implement your change management program
  • Phase 3: Reinforcing change – assess your results, implement corrective action and celebrate successes

As you walk through each phase, the specific foundational information, assessments, templates, guidelines, checklists and tools will be provided to accomplish each task as it is defined. You are provided with what you need when you need it – that’s why it’s called a toolkit!

In addition to a framework for creating and implementing a change management plan, the Practitioner eToolkit includes resources for additional clarity:

Problem Solving

What are some of the typical challenges other organizations have encountered? This is a question we hear frequently from new practitioners as they begin to apply the knowledge gained in the Prosci Certification Program to projects and change initiatives in their organization. This section highlights key information on getting others on board with change management, managing resistance and sponsor challenges.

Finesta Financial – A Sample Company

We recently added a new section to the Practitioner eToolkit called Finesta Financial. Finesta is a fictional company used by Prosci as a sample company. Finesta is for illustrative purposes as a composite of many projects and clients. All scenarios, people, and roles represented are fictitious. Each was created to describe typical challenges faced when managing change and the decisions and actions that could be taken to address them. Finesta creates a context for providing example outputs from training programs that leverage best practice research consistent with the Prosci methodology. Of course, the outputs and change plans you create should be customized and scaled specific to your organization and the nature of the projects and change initiatives you are managing, but the Finesta plans are examples you can refer to as you go through the process.

Practitioner eToolkit:  Dynamic and Responsive 

In early 2016, the Practitioner eToolkit replaced a paper version and toolkit which contained static information. As an electronic support resource, the Prosci team can now continually refresh the components and content, providing dynamic and responsive information as it becomes available. Watch for information on exciting enhancements throughout 2017 and beyond.
